Basic Lapidary Equipment?

I want to get into Lapidary but need advise on what basic equipment I should be looking for. Is it better to start out with used or is buying new the best? I need tumblers and what else? I have an old barn that we are turning into a shop for this. Any advise is appreciated.

How can I get instructions for rock tumbler?

Bought a rock tumbler at a thrift shop, still in box but no instructions. Went to website on box, could buy refill kit, etc but no instructions. Called 800# on box & was given snail mail address, been 3 weeks, no reply.

well if you got the same sort i've got you'll need the refill kit before you can start!

then its as simple as 1234!

first you put in the rocks and the #1 grinding power and water to cover the rocks and let it tumble for 2-4 days and then check the water level to make sure its still just above the rocks. tumble for a total of 12-14 days. or until all the ruff/ sharp edges are smooth.

then pour out the mixture and rinse the rocks put them back into the tumbler and add the #2 grinding powder and add water to cover the rocks. tumble for another 7-8 days. or until they are almost smooth.

next you will want to pour out the mixture and wash the rocks thuroghly and also wash out the tumbler. (use a bit of ajax and water and let it tumble for a bit to remove all rock dust from the inside of the tumbler)

once every thing is clean of dust and dirt add the rocks and #3 powder (polish) and water to the tumbler. tumble for another 2-4 days. until they are smooth and shiny!

(make sure you grease the moving points and the inside of the tumbler when ever you remove the lid.)(also make sure you have a good rubber seal in the top of the tumbler bucket) (the site you found to get the refill kit should sell replacement seals as well and the refill kit comes with some i think.)

What brand of reloading equipment should I buy?

I want to begin reloading pistol, rifle and shotgun shells but I don't know which brand is recommended.

The nice thing about reloading equipment is that there is not really a brand to avoid. They are all decent quality for getting into the hobby. It's only when you are trying to reach the next level and become an expert at it that the differences between manufacturers start to show up. And even then, the difference is mostly in the dies.

Most people will start with Lee or RCBS gear. The single-stage Rock Chucker is what I prefer of the two, it's a solid reloading press that can be upgraded a bit. Using a single stage, you go through each step of the process for a whole batch of shells, then change the die and do the next step. If you want to spend a bit more right out of the chute, get a progressive press (sometimes called a turret press). These fit all the dies at once and rotate the shell through each step. I would however avoid the really expensive stuff for now - make sure you like the hobby first. Lee is also a decent choice if you like the color red instead of green, otherwise just as good of quality.

The next piece is die selection. I've got a mix of dies, mostly RCBS, but also some Hornaday and Corbin. But these are standard sized, so they typically fit in any press. I've had better luck with more expensive dies and that's about all there is to say about dies. Oh, and spraying your brass with silicon oil right before reloading is a good habit to get into. Nothing more frustrating than a stuck shell.

As for brass cleaners, I prefer to use Lortone Rotary Tumbler instead of the vibrating cleaner most guys use. The tumbler motor lasts a lot longer than a vibratory motor, and I can use it for Lapidary Work. It also costs a bit more.
