Basic Lapidary Equipment?

I want to get into Lapidary but need advise on what basic equipment I should be looking for. Is it better to start out with used or is buying new the best? I need tumblers and what else? I have an old barn that we are turning into a shop for this. Any advise is appreciated.

How can I get instructions for rock tumbler?

Bought a rock tumbler at a thrift shop, still in box but no instructions. Went to website on box, could buy refill kit, etc but no instructions. Called 800# on box & was given snail mail address, been 3 weeks, no reply.

well if you got the same sort i've got you'll need the refill kit before you can start!

then its as simple as 1234!

first you put in the rocks and the #1 grinding power and water to cover the rocks and let it tumble for 2-4 days and then check the water level to make sure its still just above the rocks. tumble for a total of 12-14 days. or until all the ruff/ sharp edges are smooth.

then pour out the mixture and rinse the rocks put them back into the tumbler and add the #2 grinding powder and add water to cover the rocks. tumble for another 7-8 days. or until they are almost smooth.

next you will want to pour out the mixture and wash the rocks thuroghly and also wash out the tumbler. (use a bit of ajax and water and let it tumble for a bit to remove all rock dust from the inside of the tumbler)

once every thing is clean of dust and dirt add the rocks and #3 powder (polish) and water to the tumbler. tumble for another 2-4 days. until they are smooth and shiny!

(make sure you grease the moving points and the inside of the tumbler when ever you remove the lid.)(also make sure you have a good rubber seal in the top of the tumbler bucket) (the site you found to get the refill kit should sell replacement seals as well and the refill kit comes with some i think.)

What is the best and most reasonably priced Rock Tumbler for home use?

Would prefer a faster turnaround time for tumbling and polishing too.

Most all of the "kiddie" tumblers for about $30-35? work pretty much the same, and do work well. If you want a more expensive one, you can check rock/lapidary shops (where they sometimes have used tumblers too) or places online:

Or you might want to go with the vibratory (vibration) type of tumbler instead of the rotary type (a drum that goes round and round). Can't remember if vibratory types are also faster though.... that also has to do with the grit types and types of rocks being tumbled:
