In jewellery making, each type of jewellery plier has its own characteristics and the best job for which it is suited. Here’s a brief description the different types of jewellery pliers available and the jobs that they are suited for when making jewellery.

Flat Nose Jewellery Pliers; These are one of the commonly used jewellery pliers, these make right angles and sharp bends in wire. These pliers can also be used to grip flat objects or to straighten out bent wire.

Round Nose Pliers; These are the most important Jewellery Tools for wire and metal working jewellery as they are very versatile and can perform a number of functions in jewellery making.  If you are making jewellery by wire wrapping then these are an essential tool.

Bent Nose Jewellery Pliers: The end of these pliers is curved upwards to give them their unique shape which allows them to easily pick up and manipulate fine wires into loops or coils. Guide to Buying a Jewellers Loupe

It is recommended for anyone buying Polished Stones that they invest in a Jewellers Loupe (pronounced loop). A jewellers loupe is a small magnify glass which fits into your pocket so you can take it with you when you are buying gemstones or jewellery to inspect them.

Jeweller’s loupe’s are different from ordinary magnifying glasses because they have special magnifying lenses that allow our eyes to focus on the gem from a much closer distance than is normally possible, This makes the object appear larger and reveals tiny details which we wouldn’t be able to view with our normal vision. The advantage of this is that you can look deep inside a stone to see its natural flaws and inclusions. It also helps the gemmologist to identify whether the gemstone is natural or synthetic.

How many lenses should a Jewellers Loupe have?
Loupes made with a single lens are generally of poorer quality and can sometimes distort the image of the gemstone or add flashes of colour to it.

A Triple Lens Jewellers loupe is usually recommended as the three lenses are placed together in such a way that distortion and colour problems are minimised.

Different magnification levels for Jewellers
Jewellers Loupes are usually labelled with a number, followed by the symbol "X,". The X refers to the magnification level. For example, a 2X loupe makes an object appear two times larger than its actual size and a 5X loupe gives you a five magnification.

A 10X triplet loupe is recommended as the best good choice for viewing gemstones. This is the type of Jewellers Loupe used by professionals to grade diamonds and other gemstones. These instructions are only intended as a Guide. Always follow the Instructions that come with your own Rock Tumbler. Before starting to use your rock tumbler we recommend you read our equipment guide for Rock Tumbling.

STEP 1

Wash your Rough Stones in a sieve to remove dirt or grit. Open the barrel.  This is often difficult with a new barrel as the lid may be stuck on.  The easiest way to do this is by immersing the barrel in hot water.

Fill the barrel ¾ full with stones and shake them to settle. Do not use less stones than this as it will not work so well because the tumbling action won’t be so efficient. Add water to just over the top of the stones.  Add the coarse silicon carbide grit as recommended for the barrel size.

Run your stone polisher for 3 or 4 days and  nights, checking them every couple of days.  Smooth beach pebbles may only need a couple of days in stage 1, while coarser stones may require up to 8 days tumbling in stage 1

When satisfied proceed to:-

STEP 2

Remove the stones from the barrel by sieving the slush into a bucket.  Important - the slush should not be put down your household drain.  You can throw out this out into a mains drain or directly into the sea*. Thoroughly clean the stones and the barrel.

Proceed as before this time with the 2^nd stage Medium Grit. Run the stone tumbler for about 5-6 days . Checking every 2 days to see how smooth the texture of the stones has become.

* Tip -  If you leave the slush for a few days it will actually harden into a solid substance and you can then break it up and put it in the bin.

When satisfied proceed to:-

STEP 3

As before, the stones must be removed from the barrel and thoroughly washed and dried before this final stage.  This time you add the final polishing powder which can be either Cerium Oxide or Aluminium Oxide.  This stage will take between 3 – 7 days. By the end of this time you should have beautifully Polished Stones.

If you are unhappy with the polish on any of your stones then its fine to put those stones back into the Stage 1 process and start again.

Jewellery findings are components that are used to turn your Polished Stones into finished jewellery. Jewellery findings are also sometimes referred to as jewelry fittings or jewellery backings. They come in various different metal finished such as sterling silver, stainless steel or gold plated.

The Most Common Types of Jewellery Findings

Bell caps
These are small clasp like jewellery findings which you glue onto the top of a tumbled stone to turn it into a pendant or to attach it to a key ring. Bell caps come in various shapes, designs and sizes. They are inexpensive and cost just a few pence each. After you have glued the bell cap onto the top of your stone a jump ring is usually attached using jewellery pliers so you can thread a chain through.

Earring Fittings
Making earring with tumbled stones can be tricky because it is often difficult to find a matching pair of stones, given that they usually come out of the tumbler barrel in different shapes and sizes. However if you can find a good pair of matching stones the easiest way to turn them into earrings is to attach a bellcap to the tip of the stones, clip on a jump ring and then attach them to earring wires which can be bought for a few pence a pair.

There are several different ways you can make lovely jewellery from your Polished Stones. The easiest way is to buy ready made Jewellery Findings and simply attach them with glue to your polished stones.

Jewellery Findings is the name given to the metal components which allow you to turn your polished stones into jewellery. These can be purchased from hobby shops or online. They are usually bought in plated metals or in sterling silver. There is a wide range of jewellery findings available to make many different types of jewellery for example rings, bracelets, earrings, pendants, cuff-links and brooches.

Equipment needed to make polished stone jewellery

• Good quality jewellers pliers which can be bought from a specialist hardware store or online at eBay. See this video for information about buying jewellery pliers.
• Epoxy Resin Glue*
• Silicon Carbide Grinding Stick for rubbing the stone in preparation for sticking on the glue.
• Jewellery Findings
• Jump Rings and chains if making pendants

*Recommended Glue. The type of glue you use is paramount to the success of your jewellery making. The use of an epoxy resin glue is recommended in making gemstone stone jewellery. These contain two different tubes of liquid which need to be mixed together and left to set usually for several hours. Always follow the instructions on the glue carefully.
