I have the opportunity to participate in a community yard sale. I want to sell my collection of beads?

How should I price them? They are stored in spice jars and pill bottles, and there are enough to fill two laundry baskets. They range from regular seed beads to larger glass beads; a small assortment of freshwater pearls; and a few Swarovski crystals.

Put the really rare ones in special containers and sell them separately for a lot more. Put all the rest in small dishes and sell them by the ounce. Have a little scale and let people buy to their heart's content.

Semi-Precious rough

What can I do with these Rough Gemstones?

I have a box full of rough precious and semi-precious gemstones that I've saved over the years. There are several good-sized precious gemstones in there, and now that I'm a bit tight on finances I thought of finally putting those things to use. But...now what? How can I get these sold/cut/graded/etc? I know a couple of them have to be worth something, at least!
Anyways, any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Any jeweler or gemologist worth their salt will tell you they can't evaluate your stones without first seeing them. They could be excellent, or the gem material may have so many inclusions or fractures they aren't safe to cut.

You should take your stones to a competent, trained gemologist for an appraisal. They will be able to tell you the market value of your stones and where (and if) you can get them cut. Don't go to jewelry chain stores like you find in the malls--their people rarely know anything beyond sapphires are always blue (which is false).

Any custom jewelry maker should have some background in Gemology. Please don't ever mix up jewelers and gemologists! Having some knowledge in one area doesn't mean the person is qualified to give you advice about the other. Though I would try a custom jeweler before anyone else, if a certified gemologist cannot be found.

if you have on you 2 different semi precious stones will the properies of the stones change?

I mean one stone has some specific properties,but if you have 2 different stones on you will the mix cause anything strange or you gain the properties of both stones?

Well...If you hold them both up to the light and look thru the color will probably be cool. Other than that I doubt they will have any effect on one another.

how do i choose colors that work well together when making bead/ gemstone jewelry?

im taking a beading class at the end of the month and i want to start put my bead collection together but i ddon't have an "eye" for colors, Please Help! Thanks!

One way is to look at what others have already done and see what you like. The simplest way to do this is to look at printed fabrics, either in clothes or in a fabric store. As you see patterns you like, look more closely to see what colors were used in the print, then pick beads to duplicate those colors (limit yourself to a few colors to start). Clothing fabrics are an especially good source for colors, since you'll end up making jewelry that goes with current clothing. A related way is to go to a paint department that has lots of paint chips and look for the kind that shows a whole color scheme - a group of colors pre-selected to work well together. Again, pick ones you like, then choose beads to match.
If you want to try choosing your own schemes, using a color wheel is a good approach. This article was written for quilters but much of it works for anyone trying to select colors. It describes all the basic 'artist' color schemes clearly and gives examples.

Cabachon and a cut (faceted) stone?

What is the difference between a cabachon and a cut (faceted) stone? Which type of presentation is more expensive to produce? Which type is more typical of precious gemstones (the most expensive ones)?

A Cab or cabachon is just a domed shaped stone. Think Opal, jade, onyx, etc. A faceted stone is how they cut diamonds and most major gemsones. Faceting is more expensive as it takes longer to produce, etc. You can find expensive gemstones in either cab or faceted form. They can be equally expensive depending on the quality of the stone itself. A good example is Emerald.
