What exactly is a Cabochon?

I know it involves arts and crafts, but what is a cabochon?

Hello there,

A cab (as it is commonly called) is a stone that is cut and polished with a flat bottom. It may have squared or rounded corners. It may have a flat, rounded or event facet cuts on its top. Hematite and onyx cabs are sometimes cut with facet cuts on the top. Those are common in mens rings. The facet cuts are for appearance in this case, they do not reflect light.

A cab is generally set in a bezel setting, however, it can be set in a prong setting. This method of cutting and polishing stones is generally used on opaque stones, but semi-translucent stones may also be cabbed. Facet cut stones reflect the light due to the many cuts. Cabs do not reflect light well.

Which way is the correct way to spell cabachons?  In the UK they tend to spell them Cabochon whereas in the US it is often spelt cabachon.  Either way it doesn't really matter.

how do i choose colors that work well together when making bead/ gemstone jewelry?

im taking a beading class at the end of the month and i want to start put my bead collection together but i ddon't have an "eye" for colors, Please Help! Thanks!

One way is to look at what others have already done and see what you like. The simplest way to do this is to look at printed fabrics, either in clothes or in a fabric store. As you see patterns you like, look more closely to see what colors were used in the print, then pick beads to duplicate those colors (limit yourself to a few colors to start). Clothing fabrics are an especially good source for colors, since you'll end up making jewelry that goes with current clothing. A related way is to go to a paint department that has lots of paint chips and look for the kind that shows a whole color scheme - a group of colors pre-selected to work well together. Again, pick ones you like, then choose beads to match.
If you want to try choosing your own schemes, using a color wheel is a good approach. This article was written for quilters but much of it works for anyone trying to select colors. It describes all the basic 'artist' color schemes clearly and gives examples.

Which solder and flux should I use for costume jewellery?

I am making jewellery and need to soft solder brass fittings together which will later have crystals set in them.
I need to buy solder wire and flux. I have been told by the elctro plater that it is better to use non resin core solder if possible.
Normally I used to use solder wire with a liquid flux. I think things have moved in since I last did this.

Realistically, for soldering jewelry you Should have a small stationary Torch setup and with this utilize Silver Solder Or a soft low melt gold solder.
Much depends on the material you are working with.
For your Soft Brass I'd lean towards Gold solder as it has a low melt point below that of soft brass and will give you a close color match.
