Rock Tumbling is a great hobby that all your family can enjoy. You can polish pebbles that you find on the beach or your garden or alternatively buy inexpensive colourful Semi-Precious stones which are suitable for rock tumbling for a more varied collection of Polished Stones. Your polished stones can then be used as ornaments, mineral collection or to make beautiful gemstone jewellery using Jewellery Findings.
When looking to buy a rock tumbler the first thing you need to do is decide what barrel size you want to buy with your tumbling machine. I usually recommend buying a small tumbling barrel machine to start off with. A tumbler barrel size of approx 2lbs is ideal as this will polish between approx 150 -300 stones (depending on the size of the stones per batch).
A rock tumbler needs to tumble each batch of stones for approximately 3 – 4 weeks at a time. As this puts quite a strain on the Tumbler’s electric motor I usually recommend you buy a rock tumbler with at least 2 years guarantee in case of problems.
Polishing stones is still a niche hobby so it is not always easy to find stones tumblers available to buy. The usual place to buy Rock Tumblers is in a specialist lapidary shop, a craft/hobby shop or online. Lapidary is the general term for stone polishing so if you see a lapidary shop they will almost certainly have stone polishers for sale.
When buying your rock tumbler, check which tumbling grits and polishes come with the machine. Find out how many barrel loads of stones the grits will last for.
