Types of grits used in stone polishing
Polishing stones in a rock tumbler requires 3 or 4 types of powders. These act as abrasives to slowly grind away the surface of the stones to make them smoother and smoother so that they will eventually shine.
Tumbling grit is sand sized particles of silicon carbide. Silicon carbide is much harder than the rocks that you are trying to polish. When the grit is rotated around and between the tumbling stones it creates minute scratches on the surface of them. This continuous scratching, slowly wears down the rocks and rounds them.
Sharp edges on the rocks are worn down faster than flat surfaces because the grit is rubbing against them on two or more sides. The result of using these silicon carbide tumbling grits is that you end up with smaller, rounded rocks that will eventually take a polish.
These are the types of grits most commonly used in stone polishing;
Stage 1 – The first step of the tumbling process is usually done with coarse 60/90 grit silicon carbide. This stage removes the sharp edges of the stones and rounds them.
Stage 2 - The second step is usually done with medium 220 grit. These smaller grit particles cut the surface of the stones more slowly than coarse grit from stage 1. Stage 2 does very little shaping or rounding of the rocks. This stage removes any scratches in the rocks left by the 60/90 grit and helps prepare the stones to take a polish.
Stage 3 (optional) - This stage is sometimes referred to as the ‘Pre-polish stage’ and uses 500 grit silicon carbide or a similar-size compound. By the end of this stage your pebbles will feel very smooth and they may even have a slight polish to them. NB some manufactures recommended this 3rd stage of grinding, while others don’t think it’s necessary.
Stage 4 – Final polishing. This is done using the polishing powder aluminium or Cerium Oxide which is a very fine powder, usually white or pink in colour.
