Rock Polishers
how can i polish a rock?
i found a really pretty rock out side, broke it open, and im trying to clean all the dirt off of it, i've soaked it in soap water, bleach water, try ed a wire brush on it just, tryed tooth paste, i've tryed everything i could think of, whats the best way to get the dirt off of it and polish it, without buying a rock polisher.
How to hand polish a rock:
1. Start with a fairly soft rock for hand polishing. Choose stones that are between 3 and 4 on the Mohs Scale of Relative Mineral Hardness.
2. Chip away any sharp edges or protrusions from your rock with a small hammer and chisel. Try and form it into the final shape you want it to be.
3. Rub rock on concrete to get off any small protrusions.
4. Begin with 50 grain sandpaper and rub rock until it's the final shape you want.
5. Move to 150 grade sandpaper to get out lines left by the coarse grade.
6. Rub the rock with 300 to 600 grade sandpaper working to remove scratches from the previous step.
7. Finish with 1500 grit sandpaper, a strip of leather or a piece of denim. Rub with a bit of polish and water until the desired shine is reached.
