Can anybody help with a question on quartz cystal lattice?
I am confused! Some text states that quartz impurities (such as Al, Fe, Mg..) become bonded into the Si02 lattice and others say they are not chemically bonded to it-but are just there. Which is correct and why? Is this correct? The quartz chemical formula is Si02 without any reference to impurites because they only occur in minute amounts compared to Si and 0?

The impurities refer to small amounts of other ions that can replace Si4+ in the structure. A typical case is Ti4+. Other ions that commonly can substitute Si4+ in the structure are Fe3+, Al3+, and Mn3+. The amount of substitution is very small about 0.001%. This impurities can give quartz colorful tints. So, they are not elements just trapped (like C, in steel) they are part of the structure, replacing Si. These substitutions produce some charge imbalances in the mineral that makes Qz to luminesce when subjected to an electron bean (cathodoluminesce). With cathodoluminesce (also known as CL) you can study the zonation of quartz due to this small differences in the impurities it contain. In general, the higher the temperature the quartz formed the more impurities it may have. Nevertheless, very low temperature colloidal quartz can also have abundant impurities.
