It is not always necessary to use polishing pebbles although we usually use them in the final 2 stages of rock tumbling. Harder stones such as agates and jaspers will probably turn out OK without using plastic pellets with your tumbling grits. However softer semi-precious Rough Stones such as snow flake obsidian generally will not take a high polish in a rotary rock unless plastic pellets are used with the grits the final stages of tumbling.
