Learning Lapidary

Id like to get into the Lapidary Arts, mineral, gem and rock hunting, where do I get the best educ. for both?

I live in So. California, no classes but geology is offered. Where do I go to start my learning?

Find a college that offers geology as a major and Jewelry Making as a minor?

Inquire if the advance jewelry making classes offer Cabochon cutting either as part of their curriculum.

The jewelry classes should also teach you not only how to set the stones, but which stones are resistant to heat, hardness, definition of the Mohs scale etc. Also get books to learn on your own to supplement your information.

There should be some local lapidary associations/clubs/occasional gatherings of hobbiests around your area. A local rock/lapidary shop should know of any around.
