This beautiful Semi-Precious gemstone is usually grey, blue or green in colour and gives amazing flashes of colour known as "labradorescence." The flashes of colour change according to the angle of refraction and may be blue, green, golden yellow or even pink. This iridescence within the stone is also shared by other types of gemstones from the feldspar family i.e. Sunstone and Moonstone.
Tumble Polished Labradorite Specimen
Labradorite was first discovered on the Labrador Peninsula in Canada. Since then it has also been found in Norway and the Soviet Union. Because of the beauty of Labradorite, fine specimens can fetch high prices. When Labradorite is in fine quality it can also be referred to as Spectrolite
Labradorite can be used in many ways to make jewellery or ornaments. It is suitable for carving and can make lovely figurines or intaglios as well as spectacular gemstone jewellery. With regards to Lapidary, Labradorite can be tumble polished with other stones of similar hardness, but the best way to cut Labradorite is into cabochons as this shows off beautifully the iridescent flashes in fine specimens.
