Which solder and flux should I use for costume jewellery?
I am making jewellery and need to soft solder brass fittings together which will later have crystals set in them.
I need to buy solder wire and flux. I have been told by the elctro plater that it is better to use non resin core solder if possible.
Normally I used to use solder wire with a liquid flux. I think things have moved in since I last did this.
Can you please recommend what is suitable for this use. If i end up using solder with a resin core. I just need to make sure the residue is gone so the electroplating works correctly.
Also, I am hopeing the lead content of the solder is not an issue if the pieces are being electroplated silver or gold on top.
Realistically, for soldering jewelry you Should have a small stationary Torch setup and with this utilize Silver Solder Or a soft low melt gold solder.
Much depends on the material you are working with.
For your Soft Brass I'd lean towards Gold solder as it has a low melt point below that of soft brass and will give you a close color match.
