What are Geodes?
The word Geode comes from the Greek word Geoides meaning "earthlike." A geode is a sphere shaped rock containing a hollow cavity which is lined with crystals. Usually geodes contain small compact crystals of Quartz on the outside edge of the cavity with agate or chalcedony layers underneath. The difference between a geode and a mineral nodule is that geodes have a hollow cavity whereas nodules are solid.

How Geodes Are Created?
Geodes started life as bubbles in volcanic rocks, animal burrows, or mud balls in sedimentary rocks. Over millions of years, the outer shell of the sphere hardens, and water containing silica lines the inside walls of the hollow cavity inside the geode. This silica precipitation contains different dissolved minerals, the most common being quartz although calcite can also be found inside geodes.
Each geode is completely unique in its composition and not even the experts can really predict exactly what is inside the geode until it is cut open as the rough exterior of a geode gives no indication of the beauty held within.

Breaking open a Geode
Professional lapidary’s use a diamond cutting saw to cleanly saw through the centre of a geode, but it is also possible to break open a geode with a geologists hammer. Simply cover the geode with a cloth and bash it hard with a Geologists Hammer.
Where Can You Find Geodes?
Geodes are found throughout the world in volcanic ash beds, deserts or limestone beds. They are commonly found in the USA notably in California, Arizona and Utah.
Rock shops usually sell geodes which you can crack open and eBay usually has a large selection of complete geodes as well as cut and Polished Geodes for home decoration.
