Guide to picking pebbles suitable for Rock Tumbling
Beach Pebbles Suitable for Rock Tumbling
Many of the stones you can find in the UK are suitable for polishing and will polish up really nicely in a Rock Tumbler. Pebbles from the beach or river bed will be smoother and take less time to polish than those in your garden, but both types will polish provided they are hard enough and not porous. See photo above for an illustration of suitable pebbles.
Below is a photo of stones that re too porous or soft for polishing. As you can see, the surface of the stones are pitted and they will feel soft to touch.
Porous Beach Pebbles not suitable for Rock Tumbling
An easy way of checking the hardness of a stone is to try to scratch the surface with a penknife. If the knife cuts a mark or produces a powdery line, then the pebble won’t polish. If the knife leaves a metallic line, then the stone is harder than steel and it will polish.
The size of the stones you pick up is also important. It’s best to select stones that are generally 1 inch in diameter or smaller, although one or two larger stones may be polished in a load that consists primarily of smaller stones. Always try to include some very small stones in your tumbling load as these help to smooth out the tumbling action.
