Citrine is a member of the quartz family and comes in yellow, orange, brown colour. Most of the Citrine on the market today has been heat treated. A deep orange Citrine which has not been heated is a rare and valuable gemstone.

Amethyst or Smoky quartz (grey / brown quartz) are members of the quartz family which are usually heated to produce Citrine. In fact, nowadays Gemmologists usually assume when they are examining a Citrine that it has been heat treated as it is very difficult to tell if it has been treated or not.
Citrine which has not been heat treated by man is thought to have achieved its colour when another coloured quartz undergoes extensive heat from the earths crust.
