Turquoise has been seen as a symbol of wealth in many ancient cultures, notably ancient Egypt where it was often worn in jewellery by the Pharaohs and also frequently used by Native American Indians in jewellery.

The name of the Turquoise gemstone of course comes from its lovely colour turquoise blue which can range from sky blue (the most sort after kind of Turquoise) through to green or greenish grey. Turquoise is an opaque gemstone and has a faintly waxy lustre and feel to it. It often has delicate veining, caused by impurities, and some collectors prefer to buy Turquoise gemstones with veining as they see this as proof of a natural stone.
Turquoise comes from secondary mineral deposits and occurs chiefly as an opaque, granular veins running through a host rock. If you are lucky enough to find a turquoise deposit, the stone is soft enough that you maybe able to extract some of the stone using a Geological Hammer. The most highly prized turquoise comes from Neyshabur, Iran. There are many Turquoise deposits in the south-western United States as well as northern Africa, Mexico, Australia and Siberia.

Hardness; Turquoise is a fairly soft stone of between 6 – 6.50 on Moh’s harness scale depending on its origin. Turquoise can be Tumble Polished, but only in a tumbling barrel containing turquoise of the same hardness. It will require less tumbling time because of its softness.
